The Cartrut Shell is one of the most abundant gastropods both intertidally and subtidally along the southern coast. The shell shape varies with location, but the widest shells with deep grooves occur in NSW, and pear-shaped shells occcur in exposed habitats. the species is an important predator on rock platforms, controlling population numbers of barnacles and mussels in many areas. The largest animals in studies in WA were found to be about 20 years of age.
